Proflight Zambia has launched its third new domestic route of 2017, heading to Kalabo in Western Province.
The new route will be operated twice weekly on Wednesday and Saturday mornings by a Cessna Caravan with a capacity of eight passengers and aims to service the new Norman Carr Safaris Lodge, King Lewanika’s Camp in Liuwa Plains as well as open up business links to the Western Province town, which is just 70km from the Mongu provincial capital.
Firecracker special fares will be available within 30 days of travel, and a Resident Special is available of only K1,700 per person return excluding taxes for those living in the Western Province and flying Kalabo-Lusaka-Kalabo.
“We are very excited about this new route which will benefit Zambia as an international tourism destination and opens up a new business route,” said Proflight Director of Government and Industry Affairs Capt. Philip Lemba.
“The flight schedule will operate between March to June and October to December to begin with; these dates coincide with the preferred times to visit Liuwa Plains for the wildebeest migration,” he added.
Flights will depart from Lusaka at 08:15hrs on Wednesdays and Saturdays to arrive in Kalabo at 10:45hrs, and return from Kalabo at 11:05hrs, to arrive in Lusaka at 13:35hrs providing connections onto Livingstone, Lusaka and Mfuwe tourism connections, Ndola and Solwezi business connections, and international connections including Proflight to Lilongwe, and flights operated by South African Airways, Kenya Airways and Emirates Airlines.
The two-and a half-hour flight compares with a 12-hour 900km journey by road.
Kalabo is the seat of the District and National Park Administration of Liuwa Plain National Park. The airline move in connecting Kalabo adheres to government’s efforts of developing Kalabo as a full flanged district that is accessible through quicker means of transportation to allow quicker growth in tourism and investment.
“With the increased tourism demand in Liuwa Plains National Park and a new lodge opening in April 2017 the support of the international tourism market allows us to combine the two markets. To compensate for the travel distance between Kalabo and Mongu we will have reduced fares for the local business market and hope that with these fares we are able to build up this route over time,” said Capt. Lemba.
